To open the bonnet:
The car should be on level ground and the oil have enough time to drain to the bottom, identify the dipstick and explain that you take out the dipstick, wipe it with a cloth, replace the dipstick, take it out again and check that the oil level is between the maximum and minimum markers. Also show where to pour more oil in if more is needed.
Point to the coolant bottle and explain it should be filled up to the mark. This should be done when the engine is cold. If you have to put water into a hot engine be careful abut very hot water and steam and don’t use cold water as this may damage the engine.
Open the bonnet, point out the windscreen water tank and explain that you fill to the top with water and screen wash if you have any.
Point to the brake fluid bottle and explain that the fluid level should be between the maximum and minimum lines.

The head restraint (headrest) should be raised by pulling the headrest towards the front of the car and lifting the restraint so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears and as close to the head as is comfortable, of the bump of the head is in the dip of the restraint.

In the hand book, look on the internet or go to a garage. Use a trustworthy pressure gauge, check pressures when tyres are cold as air expands when it warms up, don’t forget to check the spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.
My car has not got an anti lock braking system but if it did an there was a problem a warning light on the dashboard would come on.
Press brake pedal, ask someone else to look for you or reverse up to a wall or garage door and look at the reflections in the glass, wall, door etc.

Apply the footbrake securely to make sure the car doesn’t roll. Take off the handbrake, apply the handbrake again until it is completely applied, it should not be above 45 degrees, if it is, it should be looked at.
Make sure the car is in neutral, gently pull the steering wheel down with the left hand and hold it there. Start the engine, there should be a noticeable movement of the steering wheel. If the power assisted steering is not working the steering will be heavy especially at low speeds.
A safe tyre will have no cuts or bulges. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across three quarters of the width of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.
Operate control to wash and wipe windscreen (turn ignition on if necessary). Pull stalk backwards to wash front screen, push stalk forwards to wash back screen.
Set the controls including the fan, temperature and air direction for the front and heated screen for the rear. Engine does not have to be started for this demonstration.
